Expert Review

Following the MG and HGUC, the Full Armor Unicorn Gundam (nickname: "Full-corn") has now been released in RG as well. The Full-corn is a kit known for its generous content regardless of grade, and the RG version has come out with an all-time great lineup to match. First off, the base body is naturally carried over straight from the existing RG Unicorn Gundam, with only the frame swapped out to a green one. So if you want a detailed look at the base body's features, check out the RG Unicorn Gundam reviewfor that. In this review, I'll be focusing on the added Full Armor weaponry and the overall kit's highlights. The Full Armor weapons include 4 hand grenade units, 2 large boosters, 1 bazooka, 3 gatlings, and 2 shields. On top of that, a hyper beam javelin and a grenade launcher mounted under the bazooka are also included, making the loadout even more generous than the HGUC. The folding storage gimmick for the hyper beam javelin and the opening hand grenade units are both faithfully reproduced, so the gimmicks are right up there with the MG. The biggest concern with this kit is probably how well the weapons stay attached — and thankfully, the connections are reasonably solid. That said, I wouldn't call them rock-solid either. Handle it carefully and things won't fall off easily, but if you're rough with it, parts will start dropping off left and right. More than that, as the overall volume increases, the fit of some parts on the base body becomes an issue. They were just about acceptable on the base body alone, but once you start hanging everything on it, some areas get noticeably wobbly. The thighs are a prime example — the sections that extend for Destroy Mode have weak connections and tend to gap open or come apart easily. The opening armor panels are unavoidable, but for all the thigh parts that aren't meant to move, I'd strongly recommend just gluing them for your own sanity. Beyond that, the top covers on the side skirts, the top cover on the crotch, and the vernier covers on the back of the legs all tend to fall off easily, so gluing those is a good idea too. Among the weapons, the tip of the bazooka pops off pretty easily as well — gluing that made it a lot more pleasant to handle. On the flip side, with the MG the rear large booster supports were always a bit shaky and nerve-wracking, but on the RG they plug directly into the boosters via ball joints, which actually makes supporting them much easier. Anyway, as long as you pay attention to the parts that don't hold well, the overall fit is better than you might fear. That said, with so many articulated and transforming sections, getting a pose set up still takes a lot of hands-on fiddling — that hasn't changed. Destroy Mode with everything opened up is especially bad, and after spending ages getting a pose right, I'd take the shot only to find I'd missed something, leading to reshoot after reshoot. Things like the crotch cover getting pushed shut by my hand, forgetting to extend the hyper beam javelin's gimmick, or not noticing one of the chest ducts had closed... People just looking at the photos can easily say "oh, you made a mistake there," but when you're shooting lots of varied shots, getting every single one perfect is harder than it sounds. (Try it yourself T_T) On top of all that, you need to brace yourself for a massive workload — as befits a Full Armor kit. In my case, the assembly, panel lining, seals, and photography all took significantly longer than the PG Seven Sword I reviewed not long ago. ^^; It felt like building 2 or 3 MGs, and while you can certainly enjoy the process, just be aware going in that the workload is substantial. So yes, it's a kit with a hefty workload that's still tricky to handle, but the satisfaction once it's done and the sheer visual impact are equally all-time great. The MG was impressive too, but the RG brings a reassuring sense of stability at a more manageable size, along with a level of detail that feels like it surpasses the MG. In particular, the articulation is overwhelmingly better than the MG, so when you add in some dynamic posing, this is hands-down the best Full Armor Unicorn kit out there in terms of overall quality. In every sense of the word, this is the ultimate RG — and if you can enjoy the long journey of building it, the end result is a fantastic kit that's well worth the effort. :-)
